Conductor

Nicholas Kok studied at New College, Oxford and the Royal College of Music In both the concert hall and the opera house he has conducted numerous world and British premieres. He is currently the Chief Guest Conductor at the West Deutsche Rundfunk Choir.

His many opera engagements include King Priam and Turnage's Twice through the Heart for English National Opera, Holt's The Nightingale’s to Blame  for Opera North, L’incoronazione di Poppea and Hänsel und Gretel for Staatstheater Stuttgart, and Cavalli’s Il Giasone in Klagenfurt. He played a large part in setting up Almeida Opera, where he premiered several new works.

Orchestras and ensembles he has worked with include the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony, Royal Scottish National, Radio Sinfonie Orchester Berlin, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Scottish Symphony, London Sinfonietta, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and the BBC Singers.

The Continuum Ensemble, one of the U.K.’s leading contemporary music groups, is based in London and dedicated to performing new and neglected music from the 20th and 21st centuries in order to enrich and enhance audiences’ knowledge and enjoyment of modern music. They have earned consistent praise from critics and audiences with performances in concert programmes, operas, festivals, radio and television broadcasts and cd recordings including over 40 world premieres and 35 U.K. premieres of music by leading composers of our time. Led by co-artistic directors Douglas Finch, pianist/composer and Philip Headlam, conductor, the ensemble has performed at the Spitalfields Music Festival, BMIC Cutting Edge, New Iberia Festival, Quebec in Motion Festival, Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge and at venues including the Purcell Room (Southbank Centre), The Warehouse, Almeida Theatre, The Coliseum, Linbury Studio, St. Gile’s Cripplegate, Union Chapel, Christchurch (Spitalfields), Old Royal Naval College, Blackheath Concert Hall and Wilton’s Music Hall.

Conductor and coach Philip Headlam has conducted in the U.K., Europe and Canada. Past engagements include English Touring Opera (Fidelio), Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (Linda da Chamounix) and Albert Hall/Gubbay Opera (Madame Butterfly) as well as Batignano Opera Festival, Italy (L’augellin bel verde by Jonathan Dove and I Giganti delle Montagne by Federico Amendola), Vlaamse Opera Studio, Ghent (Liszt and Scelsi) and the Theatre Royale de la Monnaie, Brussels (Britten, Zemlinsky, Francesconi and Bartholomee.) As a coach and repetiteur, he has worked for the English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, City of Birmingham Touring Opera, English Touring Opera, Music Theatre Wales, BBC Television, Wexford Festival (Ireland), Aldeburgh Festival, Banff Festival (Canada), Musica del Chiostro, Batignano, Italy, the Israel Vocal Arts Institute and the Royal Academy of Music, London.

Matthew Sharp studied cello with Boris Pergamenschikow in Cologne, voice with Ulla Blom in Stockholm and English at Trinity College, Cambridge. He has performed at major venues and festivals worldwide as solo cellist, baritone and actor.

Matthew has appeared as solo performer with the RPO, LPO, RLPO, CBSO, Orchestra of Opera North, SCO, EUCO, ESO, Manchester Camerata, Orchestra of the Swan, Arensky Chamber Orchestra, and Ural Philharmonic, performed principal roles for Opera North (Papageno, Pied Piper), ROH2 (Exposure, Pleasure's Progress), Almeida Opera (The Silent Twins) and the Young Vic (Wolf and Hero) and National Theatre Studio, given solo performances at the Glastonbury and Latitude festivals, and at festivals from Sydney to Toronto, Sao Paulo to Delhi, recorded for Sony, EMI, Decca, Naxos, Somm and Avie, given over fifty world premieres - including the title role in Sir John Tavener's The Fool and Errollyn Wallen's Cello Concerto - and appeared in recital as cellist and singer at Wigmore Hall, SBC and Salle Gaveau. As writer, composer and performer, he collaborates regularly with leading artists from film, theatre and dance.

His music theatre works have toured to major festivals in Europe, India, China and the US. Matthew is Creative Director of Revelation St Mary's, Ashford and artist-in-residence with the Arensky Chamber Orchestra. He was artistic director of the Deal Festival for three years, transforming its profile, smashing box office records and introducing a year-round outreach initiative called Pyramideal.

Matthew has been a guest lecturer at GSMD, CSSD, Trinity Laban, Dartington College and Leeds and Portsmouth Universities. He has devised and delivered masterclasses and bespoke and pioneering workshops and projects for Juilliard, RWCMD, ENO, Opera North, WNO, ETO, Philharmonia, LPO, Orchestra of the Swan, Theatre de Complicité, Barbican, South Bank Centre, Wigmore Hall, the International Ingenium Academy and CoMA, and in India, Russia and Scandinavia.

Harries studied music at the University of York, graduating in 1981 before going on to study Double Bass with Tom Martin at the Guildhall School of Music. He was a member of Bill Bruford's Earthworks from 1989 to 1993 and Steeleye Span from 1989 to 2001 and has since worked as a session musician for Brian Eno, Katie Melua, Film Composers David Holmes and Stephen Warbeck, writer Alan Moore, on the audio CD version of Moore's comic book novel "Angel Passage" (2001), and others. He can be heard on the soundtracks of films including "Heart" (1999), "Quills" (2000) and "Perrier's Bounty" (2009).

Errollyn’s music is both immediately familiar and entirely original. She combines popular styles, aspects of minimalism, baroque counterpoint, modernist rhythms, and lush romantic textures and draws on influences around her. Many of the works on this album have personal associations and are written for long-standing musical collaborators and friends who appear on this recording.

The Cello Concerto combines passion and beauty with a fearless, rigorous technique. It fuses the cello tradition of Bach to Britten with bluesy ostinatos, angular modernist jolts and an immersive string texture. Bach is also the influence in the 4-movement work Photography, with the second movement quoting Sinfonia No.14 (BWV 800).

If Bach provides one of the mainstays of Errollyn’s kaleidoscopic idiom, the other most obvious one is Purcell. The final track In Earth eerily adapts and distorts Dido's famous lament, using popular music delivery with Errollyn on vocals and jazz musician Tim Harries on bass guitar, accompanied by Quartet X.
