Alex Tay
Alex’s music – described as ‘wildly inventive and riveting’ (Laurence Osborn), ‘overflowing with beauty and poignancy’ (Tonia Ko), and ‘chaotic’ (Michelle Hromin) – distils the overwhelm of existence with its pace, intensity and hyperactivity. From 2016 - 2022, he, guided by Professor Julian Anderson CBE and Malcolm Singer, composed illusions which confound perceptions of speed, continuity, and ontology as part of his doctorate at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Teachers and collaborators include Colin Matthews, Christian Mason, François Xavier-Roth, the London Symphony Orchestra (Panufnik 2018 - 19), Brett Dean, Jack Sheen, the LPO (LPO Young Composers’ Scheme 2021 - 22), Park Lane Group, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Robin Holloway, Richard Causton, Jeremy Thurlow (Kings and Churchill College Cambridge), Judith Weir (Dartington), Gerry Cornelius, Patrick Bailey, Hugh Brunt, Britten Sinfonia and the Heath Quartet (Dartington). Alex will work with EXAUDI and GBSR duo on a Wigmore Hall commission, which will be premiered in 2025.
