Brian Irvine
Brian Irvine’s music is a highly personal concoction of contemporary classical, punk, cartoon, jazz, thrash and trash.
His music has been commissioned and performed by many international artists and organisations including, London Symphony Orchestra, Welsh National Opera, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia, 4-Mality, Red Note Ensemble and has involved collaborations with many diverse artists including: Seamus Heaney (poet), Eduard Bersudsky (sculptor), Cy Twombly (painter), John McIlduff (writer/filmmaker/director), Joanna Macgregor (piano), Paul Dunmall (improviser), LAU (BBC Folk Award Winners), Ivor Cutler (poet/ singer), Keiji Haino (guitar), David Holmes (producer/composer/DJ) and Darragh Morgan (violin).
He was Associate Composer with the Ulster Orchestra (2008-2012), Professor of Creative Arts at the University of Ulster (2011-2015), Music Laureate for the City of Belfast (2016) and the PRSF Composer in Residence for Hull City of Culture 2017.
Awards include the BBC Jazz Award for best new work, British Composers Award for Opera, Major Individual Artist Award (Arts Council of Northern Ireland), Allianz Arts Award (for best use of music in the community) and the prestigious 2015 Paul Hamlyn Foundation Composers Award.
