Joseph Atkins
Joseph Atkins grew up in Bristol and read music at New College, Oxford and Composition at the Royal Academy of Music.
Concert works include pieces for the Lichfield Festival, Song in the City, BBC Elstree Concert Band, the Metier Ensemble, the Spitalfields Festival, COMA London, the Longfordbrown Piano Duo and the New Cambridge Singers. He is also the composer of three sacred works for the historic London Bridge church of St Magnus the Martyr, including the Missa Sancti Magni for solo clarinet and vocal quartet.
Joe writes extensively for the theatre, specialising in work that crosses genres. Recent collaborations include music and lyrics for Carnation for a Song, a community musical for the Young Vic Theatre, written with Megan Cronin, music for Not Such Quiet Girls, a musical play by Jessica Walker for Opera North and the Leeds Playhouse, incidental music for Cush Jumbo’s Olivier-nominated Josephine and I for the Bush Theatre, London and Public Theater, New York, and Songs for Our Times, a filmed concert for the Lichfield Festival written in response to the coronavirus pandemic. He is also a visiting composer and higher education practitioner for Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
He made his TV composing debut with the score to Mud Sweat and Tractors: The Story of Agriculture (BBC2/4) and went on to score Shooting the War (BBC4) and El Alamein: The Soldiers' Story (UKTV Yesterday).
