Lauren Marshall
Lauren is composer and keyboardist based in London and Boston. She is currently studying with Chaya Czernowin at Harvard University, having graduated from the Purcell School and the Royal College of Music Junior Department. From 2014-2017 she was a composer with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain where she was tutored by Larry Goves. She became principal composer at NYO in 2016 and assistant composition tutor in 2018.
Lauren has composed works for a diverse range of ensembles, from solo to orchestral, including a recent orchestral piece ‘Suspended between earth and air’, commissioned by the National Youth Orchestra for their 2017 winter tour. In January 2017 it was performed at Nottingham Royal Concert Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, and the Royal Festival Hall, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The work was met with critical acclaim, described as ‘wonderfully assured’ (The Guardian), and ‘a miracle of inspiration’ (Seen and Heard International), Classical Source saying ‘Lauren Marshall clearly possesses genuine textural imagination.’
Her works have been performed in the UK and US by various performers, including [Switch~ Ensemble], Kammer Klang in association with the London Sinfonietta, the Parker Quartet, Kathryn Williams, the Hermes Experiment, and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. She frequently performs herself, both as a musician, but also as through physical theatre and movement based audience participation. Her works have been brought to venues at Harvard University, the Southbank Centre, Cafe OTO, Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Music Room at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Tate Britain, and Snape Maltings.
In May 2017 she was commissioned by Morgan Stanley to compose a site-specific chamber work for Chris Beardshaw’s garden at Chelsea Flower Show, described as ‘beautifully pastoral’ by The Telegraph, and ‘delicately evocative’ by The Times. She has also been involved in multiple London-based composition projects, including a collaborative work with Hannah Kendall and BBC Radio 3 for International Women’s Day 2017.
More recent projects include works for the Parker Quartet and Kammer Klang in association with the London Sinfonietta, for a piece to be performed at Cafe OTO in London, UK, as well as directing an interdisciplinary collaboration with the UK Beijing Arts Association and the UK Chinese ensemble, where young composers and movement artists were brought together to create an immersive sold-out event, based Beijing ‘tea-house’ culture at the Purcell School of Music in Hertfordshire, UK.
As a keyboardist, Lauren studied with Andrew Ball at the Purcell School, and Jane Chapman at the Royal College of Music JD. Lauren has a diverse repertoire, ranging from works by Liszt, C.P.E. Bach, and Byrd to Lachenmann, Tower, Feldman, and Ulstvolskaya. She is active in various chamber ensembles both as a pianist and a continuo player, as well as contemporary ensembles, regularly premiering new works by herself and other young composers.
Lauren was a student at the Purcell School from 2009-2018, where she was awarded the Tim Stevenson Award for Composition. She studied composition with Simon Speare and Brian Elias. In her time at Purcell she also founded the Primary Pitches in 2015, which introduced composition and musical experimentation through collaborative graphic scoring and body percussion to primary schools with underfunded music departments in the Three Rivers County area.
