Lennox Berkeley
An English composer and teacher, Lennox Berkeley was born near Oxford, and studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger; on his return to England he formed a lasting friendship with Britten.
During World War II, he worked at the BBC, and from 1946-68 taught composition at the Royal Academy of Music, where his pupils included Nicholas Maw and John Tavener. His large output in all the standard genres ranges in manner from the Gallic charm of his Serenade for Strings (1939) to the more astringent drive of his one-movement Third Symphony (1969).
He was knighted in 1974; the composer Michael Berkeley is his son.
