Matthew Taylor
Matthew Taylor was born in London, won a Music Scholarship to Queens' College, Cambridge in 1983 where he studied with Robin Holloway. In 1986 he won a Conducting Scholarship to Guildhall School of Music and the following year studied with Bernstein in Germany. He also received special encouragement from Robert Simpson whose work proved to be a potent and stabilising influence on his development; Taylor 's recording on Hyperion of Simpson's 11th Symphony won a Record of the Year award in 2004.
Taylor has been featured Composer at Malvern Festival, Associate Composer at Blackheath Halls and Composer-In-Residence with sound.collective.
His music seeks to give the symphonic tradition relevance and vitality in the modern age showing concerns with the essentials of symphonic thought in the long-term generation and deployment of energy using a language which stems ultimately from the legacies of Nielsen, Sibelius and Tippett. His output to date includes three symphonies, concerti for piano, violin, viola, double bass, horn and clarinet, seven string quartet , two piano trios, a piano sonata and songs.
