Studied with Milos Istvan at Janácek Academy of Music, Brno; later in London with George Benjamin and in Paris with Gérard Grisey. Also played oboe. Teaches composition at Brno Conservatory. Works frequently reflect his devout Christian faith: Second Symphony, winner of Janácek Foundation Prize, is extensive St John Passion for soloists, chorus and orchestra; music for piano includes ongoing cycle of 24 Preludes and Fugues based on the bible. Has also written five symphonies as well as works for chorus, voice, chamber ensembles and solo instruments.
