Samantha Fernando
Samantha was born in Berkshire (UK) in 1984 and now lives in Surrey. Samantha’s work has been performed internationally by numerous ensembles including The London Sinfonietta, Xasax Saxophone Quartet and the Philharmonia Orchestra, and at such venues as King’s Place, the Linbury Studio (ROH), St. Martin-in-the-Fields and The Queen Elizabeth Hall. In 2013, she was awarded an RPS Composition Prize and was commissioned to write a new work for the Philharmonia Orchestra as part of the Music of Today series. This was premiered in May 2014 at the Royal Festival Hall. Also in 2013, the London Sinfonietta commissioned her to write Positive/Negative Space which was premiered at the Purcell Room.
The last two years have seen Samantha work on projects with Silbersee Vocal Ensemble (Amsterdam) and LOD Muziektheater (Ghent); she took part in the Opera Creation course at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence with Martin Crimp; as well as commissions for the London Sinfonietta, Aldeburgh Music and the Oxford Lieder Festival. In 2015, her music was performed at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival by the Riot Ensemble.
She composed The Journey Between Us- a large-scale work for narrator and ensemble, commissioned by the London Sinfonietta that premiered at the Southwark Playhouse in February 2016. Samantha is a Lecturer in Composition at Royal Holloway, University of London.
