Laurence Crane
Laurence Crane was born in Oxford in 1961 and studied composition with Peter Nelson and Nigel Osborne at Nottingham University. His music is mainly written for the concert hall, although his output includes pieces initially composed for film, radio, theatre, dance and installation. He lives and works in London.
His music is performed, broadcast and recorded worldwide and he has worked with many ensembles in the UK and abroad, including Apartment House (UK), Plus-Minus Ensemble (UK), IXION (UK), Noszferatu (UK), Decibel (UK), EXAUDI (UK), London Contemporary Orchestra (UK), London Sinfonietta (UK), Ives Ensemble (Netherlands), Orkest de Volharding (Netherlands), Cikada Ensemble (Norway), asamisimasa (Norway), Oslo Sinfonietta (Norway), Ensemble Kore (Canada), Quatuor Bozzini (Canada), Freesound Ensemble (Canada), Ensemble Offspring (Australia) and 175 East (New Zealand).
Pianists who have performed his work include Michael Finnissy, Philip Thomas, Mark Knoop, John Snijders and Ellen Ugelvik; instrumentalists and singers include Anton Lukoszevieze, Andrew Sparling, Nancy Ruffer, Rhodri Davies, Anders Førisdal, Claire Edwardes, Oliver Coates, Michael Bonaventure, Heather Roche, Håkon Stene, Manuel Zurria, Susanna Wallumrød, Juliet Fraser, Melanie Pappenheim and Lore Lixenberg. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic have performed his orchestral music.
Recent works have included a duo for the Norwegian singer Susanna Wallumrød and the Swedish double bass player Dan Styffe, a new piece for Juliet Fraser and 840 Series at Cafe Oto, and a trio for the Norwegian percussion ensemble Pinquins.
Crane’s Octet was shortlisted for the 2009 Royal Philharmonic Society awards; in the chamber-scale composition category, and in 2017 he was a recipient of an ‘Award for Artists’ from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. He is a member of the teaching staff in the composition department at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
