Laurie Tompkins
Laurie Tompkins (b.1990) is a composer, and co-founder and co-director of the Slip label.
His music works through pop cultural trauma, taking pleasure in ritual self-abasement. His projects are impure coagulations of instruction and improvisation; text, sound, image; lone wolf and mob; human and computer technologies. He primarily works with a tight group of long-standing collaborators.
Laurie has performed at London’s Café Oto, Bristol’s Spike Island, Aldeburgh Music, Aarhus’ Radar, Berlin’s Reflektor, Harplinge’s Harp Art Lab and New York’s National Sawdust. His commissions have premiered with the House Of Bedlam, LSO Soundhub Scheme, ddmmyy and 840 series. He has been broadcast on Resonance FM and BBC Radio 3.
On record, he has released ‘Ample Profanity’ (2018) - a collaboration with cellist Oliver Coates - and ‘Heat, War, Sweat, Law’ (2016). Both put mawkish obsessions - Jeff Beal, Colin Farrell, Heaven 17 - through an affective wringer of performative strain, dilettante electronics, and chaotic group dynamics.
Right now: ‘Fatty’ - a video series with Joel Wycherley and Jessica Hickie-Kallenbach - for the 33-33 label; ‘Years Went By’ with pianist Eliza McCarthy; ‘Sharp Love, Slow Faint’ with Eliza and Ashley Paul; and the debut Yes, Indeed LP with bassist Otto Willberg.
