Gareth Moorcraft
Gareth Moorcraft is a composer and pianist from South Wales. His music has been performed widely in the UK and Europe by musicians including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the CHROMA ensemble, Endymion Ensemble, and L'Association Eubage. In 2012, his work Rondo for wind trio won the British Composer Award student competition and was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. He has also been awarded the Eric Coates Composition Prize (2013) and the Ty Cerdd National Welsh Composition Prize. Gareth has been selected twice as a Britten-Pears Young Artist, and his recent work LUDO for chamber orchestra was premiered at the 2016 Aldeburgh Music Festival. Since 2015, Gareth has also been an associate composer with the London Symphony Orchestra's SoundHub scheme.
Gareth's work places emphasis on theatrical aspects of music and he has a strong interest in multimedia work, collaborating regularly with dancer and choreographer Mathieu Geffre for the National Dance Company of Wales, and he is currently collaborating with the Suse Tietien Tanzorchester in Hamburg. Gareth has also worked on several projects with Welsh poet Lydia White. Their recent song cycle I am your reflection (2015) was toured in the UK, Norway and Switzerland, and they recently completed a site-specific collection of songs and interludes for the Swansea Museum Collections Centre. Alongside his work with the Philharmonia Orchestra's Composers' Academy this year, Gareth has been writing a new work for the Kugoni Trio, which explores historical dance styles from different eras.
Gareth read music at Worcester College, University of Oxford, where he studied composition with Robert Saxton. He was later awarded an AHRC scholarship to study for an MMus degree in composition with Gary Carpenter at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM). Gareth is currently working on his PhD with David Sawer and Simon Bainbridge (also at RAM). His ongoing studies are generously supported by the Arts Council of Wales.
