Larry Goves
Larry Goves is a composer based in the UK. He has written for the London Sinfonietta, the Nash Ensemble, the Hallé, the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, EXAUDI, Psappha, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, Ensemble 10/10, L'Instant Donné and others from the UK and abroad. He performs live electronics in a variety of contexts in particular with his own experimental music group the house of bedlam.
His music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and New Zealand's Concert FM, New York's WQXR and Radio France and been released on NMC, Dutton Epoch, PRAH, the London Sinfonietta's Jerwood Series, Nonclassical and Slip Discs.
Larry founded, writes for and performs electronics with the house of bedlam; they have performed at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Faster than Sound 2008, the Purcell Room, Nonclassical at Hoxton's Macbeth, in the Aldeburgh Festival, in the CCA in Glasgow, at the RNCM and have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3. They have also attended residencies at Scotland's Cove Park and at Aldeburgh Music.
He places emphasis on collaboration and has worked particularly closely with the performers Oliver Coates, Sarah Nicolls, Tom McKinney and Carl Raven. He has also worked with sound designer and artist David Sheppard, composer and DJ mira calix and neuroscientist Beau Lotto.
His closest collaborator is the writer Matthew Welton: Larry has set a number of Matt's poems in a variety of contexts including orchestral songs, multi-media works for the London Sinfonietta and chamber theatre works. Matt also writes for and performs spoken word with the house of bedlam, and together he and Larry are recipients of a Jerwood-Aldeburgh Opera Writing Fellowship, and have written an opera, I do this I do that, based on the life of Frank O'Hara.
Larry Goves studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Anthony Gilbert and at Southampton University with Michael Finnissy. In 2011 he was shortlisted for a Royal Philharmonic Prize in composition and was a recipient of a Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award. He currently teaches composition at the Royal Northern College of Music and for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
