John Aulich
John Aulich (b.1992) is a British new music composer based in Buffalo, US. His works have been performed worldwide, including the UK, the US and Australia. He undertook his undergraduate and master’s studies at the University of Huddersfield, with Bryn Harrison and Aaron Cassidy (2011 – 2016). On the completion of his undergraduate degree, he was awarded the Chancellor’s Prize, the J. Wood & Sons Prize for Composition and the Truscott Prize for All-round Achievement. He is currently undertaking his PhD at the University at Buffalo with David Felder (since 2018).
John has had works performed by Kathryn Williams, ELISION Ensemble, Richard Craig and Tom Bell. John was recently commissioned by ELISION to create a new large-scale work to be performed in May 2020. His flute piece, Just a Different Wolf (2018), was recorded by Kathryn Williams and released as part of Coming up for Air on NMC (HCR Imprint) in 2019.
John’s music spans a number of broad themes, including viscerality, ambiguity of meaning, sensuality and touch, and the philosophical and political connotations of music and notation. John’s work is characterized by evocative, highly-charged and volatile sound-worlds stemming from the physicality of performance. His work combines the erotic and the anxious, circumscribing a complex interplay of potential narratives that create fissures and ruptures in the listening experience.
John also has considerable experience as a performer, and worked as part of Edges ensemble to deliver the premier performances of Tim Parkinson’s opera Time With People, in collaboration with the composer. In this capacity, John has performed experimental music at numerous events, including HCMF (in ’11 and ’12) and Music We’d Like to Hear (2011), and LCMF. Until he moved away from England in 2017, he worked extensively with James Wood as one half of Aulich/Wood Trio, with whom he released two discs on Silent Howl in 2016 and 2018.
