Geoffrey Poole

Geoffrey Poole was born in Ipswich in 1949 and raised on the London/Essex border at Chingford. He studied at Forest School (having won an Essex County Scholarship), UEA (where he met Britten), Southampton (tutored by Alexander Goehr and Jonathan Harvey) and Leeds University (Goehr). His broadcast commissions include four works for The Lindsays, symphonic works performed by Hallé Orchestra, RLPO, BBCSO, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Goldberg Ensemble, choral work for The King's Singers, the Tavener Consort / BCMG and the BBC Singers, and concertos that explore non-Western situations, such as gamelan or West African Drumming. He was Head of Composition at Manchester University from 1976 to 1991, and at Bristol University from 2001 until becoming Professor Emeritus in 2009. He then found time to rekindle his early skills as a pianist and premiered many colleagues in the South West region, also forming chamber ensembles, notably with violinist Madeleine Mitchell, for whom he wrote Rhapsody.

Performed in 30 countries Geoff’s work is represented on some 20 CDs, his own performance of the 64-movement 3-hour work A Pianist’s I Ching (composed from 2001 to 2018) being the most recent at the time of writing in 2020.
