Freya Waley-Cohen

British-American composer Freya Waley-Cohen writes music that is ‘at once intimate and visionary’ (BBC Music Magazine) with an ‘instinct for colour’ (The Arts Desk) that can move from ‘a bubbling, popping, feathered array of orchestral sounds’ to a ‘quiet, eerie, interior world’ (The Guardian).

Waley-Cohen has been commissioned by institutions and ensembles including Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Proms, Wigmore Hall, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, London Chamber Orchestra, The King’s Singers, The Manchester Collective and The Hermes Experiment. Alongside her concert music, Waley-Cohen has created a number of immersive works and installations including Permutations (2017), an interactive artwork and a synthesis of architecture and music created during an Open Space Residency at Snape Maltings from 2015 – 2017 and released as an EP on Signum Records. Her Ivor Composer Award Nominated opera WITCH, was commissioned to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Music in 2022, where it was conducted by Ryan Wigglesworth and directed by Polly Graham. Waley-Cohen was a founding member and artistic director of Listenpony concert series and record label which commissioned over 50 composers from 2012-2022
