A Composer's Space: Linda Buckley
11th January 2022
Features NMC RecordingsWe're kicking off the new year by starting a new series on Discover called A Composer's Space. This will give you an insight into the composer's creative space, including pictures of places they create their pieces and how it affects their music. First in the series, Linda Buckley shows us where she most likes to compose – read Linda thoughts below.
The first one is the living room:
"It depends on whether I'm in Ireland or Scotland, but I love the research phase of working on a new piece, so if in Glasgow here in the living room, I might sketch ideas in words or manuscript and read work connected to the music I'm writing. At the moment I'm working on a voice, flute and electronics piece for Michelle O'Rourke and Lina Andonovska based on text by Doireann Ní Ghríofa - they're all friends of mine, so that makes the process really special."
Then in the back garden:
"Being outside in nature is so important for me, especially if I'm working on music - stepping away, even into the back garden helps ideas to take shape in the mind, away from the page or computer. When working from home during lockdown, watching the birds and squirrels was inspiring for me, their sense of joyous freedom."
NMC's Discover platform is created in partnership with ISM Trust.
