NMC acquires Psappha label's catalogue
3rd November 2023
News NMC RecordingsNMC is pleased to announce the full acquisition of Psappha's catalogue of recordings.
The Manchester-based ensemble made the difficult decision to close in late 2022 following the loss of 100% of the organisation's public funding from Arts Council England.
Throughout its 32-year career, Psappha commissioned and premiered music by more than 500 composers, and also launched its own record label in 2004. Since September 2021 NMC has distributed the Psappha catalogue as part of NMC Services, a branch of NMC that looks after the distribution of smaller, like-minded labels giving them access to our worldwide network of physical and digital distributors.
One of NMC's many commitments to new music is rescuing significant recordings that have been deleted, or would not otherwise be available to listen to. As Psappha closes its doors, they have signed over the full rights to NMC for all their releases, ensuring that these important recordings remain fully available globally and in perpetuity.
The Psappha catalogue includes works by the ensemble’s founding Patron and close collaborator, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, as well as the acclaimed 2022 release celebrating the group's 30th Anniversary which features recordings of new commissions by John Casken, Tom Coult, Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade, Alissa Firsova, Tom Harrold and George Stevenson.
Over the past 32 years Psappha’s contribution to living composers and the musical life of this country has been immeasurable. We were enormously saddened to learn of their decision to close but proud and happy that NMC Recordings is able to safeguard their legacy by ensuring their magnificent recorded archive, which we have previously distributed, will be available in perpetuity. If you’re not familiar with it, I really recommend you take some time to explore.
We are delighted that NMC will continue to be the custodian and distributor of Psappha's recorded archive. We know that our archive will be in good hands following the very sad closure of Psappha itself.
NMC's Discover platform is created in partnership with ISM Trust.
