NMC's latest education project ended with a bang last week as students gave world premieres of their six brand new pieces

Bringing together musicians from Chineke!, Europe’s first majority Black and ethnically diverse orchestra, NMC composer James B. Wilson, and young musicians from two schools in Waltham Forest, Together In Sound is the latest in our series of education projects developed in partnership with Chineke! that focus on working with young people to help them create their own new music.

Throughout October the students took part in weekly workshops lead by mentors from Waltham Forest Music Education Hub and musicians from Chineke!, which focussed on different compositional techniques, group exercises and improvisation, as well as guidance from NMC on how to create a digital release, including write programme notes, publicising their music and create album art.

The project will culminated with the students giving world premiere performances of their new pieces alongside Chineke! musicians to a packed out Leyton Great Hall. The concert was hosted by workshop leader Rosie Bergonzi, and featured each student ensemble performing their new piece, as well as performances by the Chineke! musicians and a colleborative performance from the whole group en masse to finish.

On top of performing their pieces live, the students also took part in a recording session with NMC's recording engineer David Lefeber to capture their new compisitions. We are delighted to present them all as digital releases which are available to listen to on NMC's website.
