Harrison Birtwistle (1934 - 2022)

It’s not easy to find adequate words for the life of Harrison Birtwistle. A giant of contemporary music, with a uniqueness of musical voice which speaks for itself, wonderfully individual and always unmistakable.

Perhaps the most appropriate thing one can say of him is that he never compromised: his vision remained constant, with an extraordinary grasp of structure and a dramatic flair matched by very few. We are very proud to have been associated with him since the early days of NMC, and that he has been a constant presence ever since.

The Mask of Orpheus  stands central in every respect: such a significant work in Birtwistle’s output, an outstanding contribution to the world of contemporary opera, and an exceptional part of our catalogue. He will be greatly missed.
